Origine du mot

De l'anglais agnostic, dérivé de gnostic par imitation du grec ancien ἄγνωστος agnôstos (« ignorant »). Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) a créé ce mot pour exprimer, dit-il, « l’antithèse évocatrice du « gnostique » dans l’histoire de l’Église, qui professait en savoir tant sur les choses mêmes à propos desquelles j’étais ignorant… ».
