Lésion de la vue dans laquelle les rayons lumineux, partis d'un centre, ne se réunissent plus en un seul point, et sont affectés d'aberration monochromatique ; on le corrige par des lentilles cylindriques.

Origine du mot

De l’anglais astigmatism. Le phénomène est découvert et décrit par Thomas Young, médecin et physicien anglais, et ainsi baptisé par William Whewell, philosophe et physicien anglais, en 1849 ; voir astigmatique.
